Costa Rica qualified for the quarter-finals of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil for the first time in its history after beating Greece 5-4 on penalties in the game that brought them together on the playground Arena Pernambuco and ended its overtime in a 1-1 draw.
Costa Rica advanced by Bryan Ruiz in the minute 52 from a shoot outside the penalty area, Greece equalized the result in stoppage time through Socrates Papastathopoulos, who followed the ball into the net while goalkeeper Costa Rica Keylor Navas threw it away, ending the original time tied 1-1.


The game did not live up to the expected level as one of the 16 games role of one of the most fun World Cup tournaments, tactic overcame on the excitement and thrill. It also sought resorting of  Costa Rica to close its ports and its dependence on the defense, especially after the expulsion of midfielder Oscar Duarte in the second half.
The first half was below average in terms of performance, both team  preferred tactical reservation on the arts and offensive desire.
With the exception of Dimitris Salpingidis chance in the 37th minute, the first half did not witness what deserves to be mentioned.


The second half began in promising where the Greek team appeared intent on scoring and almost did in the second minute by Samaras header. Bryan Ruiz surprised defense of the Greeks by scoring a goal in the minute 52. and Costa Rica completed the match with ten men since the 66th minute, in which Oscar Duarte was expelled.
and Greece exploited the numerical lack and finally realized the equalizer in stoppage time and almost added a second goal.
The Greek team dominated on the first period of extra time, which saw a decline of almost complete players to Costa Rica after a decline in their fitness and physical fit, but the Greeks were not successful in translating their dominance into goals. 


The second period of extra time saw some attempts on the part of Costa Rica, but with a survival advantage for Greece that almost resolved the confrontation in the final moments .
Players  scored for Greece  in penalty shoot all of Costas Mitrocaloo, Lazarus Kristodoulopoulos, Jose Houlibas.
While players  of Costa Rica who scored in penalty shoot, Celso Borges, Brian Ruiz, Giancarlo Gonzalez, Joel Campbell, and Michael Aomana.
